Autobiographical Therapeutic Performance is a form of theatre and therapy that gives the client the opportunity to uncover and transform self-defeating “life scripts” through drama therapy processes. Life scripts are unconscious patterns that shape personal narratives and identities in both positive and negative ways. Participants will come away with tools and clinical concepts that they can immediately apply in their practices.

Learning objectives:

  • To examine spoken and unspoken messages transmitted by society, family and personal traumas.
  • To explore formative experiences
  • To learn how to implement experiential methods (including  improvisation, drama therapy, Playback Theatre and playwriting techniques) into the process of creating ATP
  • To help clients develop new life-affirming narratives
  • To explore aesthetic and therapeutic dilemmas
  • To learn a method of keeping track of process as well as the product

The workshop will culminate in a presentation of brief individual performance pieces in front of the class created by the participants.

This workshop will qualify for 21 CEU’s with both the NADTA and the CCPA.

Armand Volkas MFA, MA, MFT, RDT/BCT is a psychotherapist, drama therapist and theatre director. He is a Registered Drama Therapist and Marriage, Family Therapist in private practice and Clinical Director of the Living Arts Counseling Center in Emeryville, California. Armand is a Board Certified Trainer with The North American Drama Therapy Association.

In his approach to autobiographical therapeutic performance, Armand combines his extensive experience as a professional actor, director, teacher and playwright with his skills as a clinician.  The use of self as therapist transforms into a “director self”, using action methods with the intention of anticipating catharsis in clients.  His method can be used with individuals as well as groups, often inspiring solo theatre pieces evolving out of his clients’ short performance pieces.
